Support - HOWTOs - Mail Records

Mail records are one item that need to be configured correctly and are slightly more complex to create than normal Host Records.

There is one important things to know about Mail Records. Mail (Mail eXchanger) Records can not point to Alias (CNAME) Records. Using the combination of the two will spell disaster and there is a high likelyhood that no mail will be received.

The following steps should be followed to make mail work correctly for the domain.

Create a Host Record with the IP address of mail server that will receive mail for the domain.

Make sure you set the host record to Dynamic if you plan to use a system with a dynamic DHCP address that changes often. Additionally, consider using a dynamic client to automate those updates.

Next add a Mail Record for the domain that uses the Host Record that was just created. It should look similar to below.

That's it.

Don't forget... If you need a backup mail server, the Mail Rescue Service, can fill that need for you so you never miss a mail message.
